Mullet Hair: Everything You Need to Know About This Trend

September 9, 2024

For many years, mullet hair was a style that was associated with rockers. Today, stylists have given it a more avant-garde twist so that it can be worn by both young people and stylish older people who may want a more elegant look. A mullet adds a rebelliousness that is so attractive when you want to change your look! Although this style can work for most people, it is true that you have to know how to adapt it to different clients.

WHAT IS MULLET HAIR?

Technically, mullet hair is scissor and razor cut hair where the back is longer, the top and bangs are shorter, and the sides are very short and/or shaved. Almost 50 years after it became famous, mullet hair is back, softened, with more layers and less contrast with the long back. Feel free to play with shorter, uneven bangs and, of course, color. You can also add new textures by emphasizing the volume in the top layers, giving a more rebellious look to even the finest hair.

How to Achieve This Look step by step

Mullet hair is a cut that appears very easy to do: short at the front, long at the back. But it has its intricacies. In order to adapt it to each face shape, you must know that on straight or wavy hair it will look much better and it will be easier to adapt than on curly hair but, everything is possible! Of course, the first thing to do is to let the hair grow at least to the shoulders.

  • Sections: create horizontal sections from the growth line to the radial division of each section, isolate the upper zones and create a U-shaped section at the crown.
  • Rear area cut: establish the length and a vertical guide at the nape of the neck. Start the point cut at 45° in the center section and finish with the ends.
  • Crown cut: take the previous section as a guide, use vertical moving sections, point cut at 90° and disconnect these sections with a slide cut at 45° all over the head. Control the sides visually according to the style your client wants (the shorter, the more rebellious!).
  • Top cut and bangs: create short point cut layers directing them towards the center and the bangs with the style you want to capture.
  • Drying and texturizing: after drying the hair completely, it is important to texturize the entire cut with slide and deep point cut techniques. This way, you will achieve the non-conformist effect.
  • Styling: end with Style Masters™ FIBER WAX™ on the ends to give this look your personal touch and welcome to the world of the mullet!

The Origin of Mullet Hair

Mullet hair (business in the front, party in the back) is the iconic style that, during the ’70s, was the “trademark” of rockers like David Bowie and, in the following decades, has remained a strong look. But it is also said that this was the hairstyle used by the French couturier Henri Mollet and that it was revived by popular personalities of the time, who adapted the surname to name the look. Be that as it may, this style is back!

TYPES OF MULLET HAIR

  • Classic Mullet. The ‘classic mullet’ features a neatly cropped front and sides, transitioning into a longer, often layered arrangement at the back. This style encapsulates the retro charm of the mullet while maintaining a contemporary edge.
  • Modern Mullet. The ‘modern mullet’ takes inspiration from its predecessor but incorporates more textured layers and an artful disheveled appearance, making it a trendy choice for those seeking a fusion of nostalgia and current flair.
  • Funky Mullet. For the bold and daring, the ‘funky mullet’ pushes boundaries with asymmetrical elements, vivid hair colors, and intricate designs shaved into the shorter sections. This avant-garde version of the mullet celebrates self-expression and individuality.
  • Revival and Trend. In recent times, the mullet has experienced a revival, becoming a sought-after look in the UK’s fashion-forward circles.
